Privacy Policy
Version 2026-08-01 · Last updated August 1, 2026
In plain English: we store your username, email, a scrambled version of your password, and your game progress. We use your email to confirm your account and to reach you about your account. We do not sell your data. You can ask us to delete your account and we will.
This policy explains what Afterlife Online (“the Game”) collects, why, and what you can do about it. Afterlife Online is operated by Net Artisan Collective (“we”, “us”).
What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details — your username, your email address, and your password. Your password is stored only as a salted Argon2 hash; we never store or have access to the password itself.
- Consent choices — the date and time you accepted these terms, which version you accepted, and whether you opted in to project news.
- Bug reports — if you submit one from inside the Game, we receive your description and (if you include it) a screenshot of your game window, along with your character name, location, client version, and operating system. Only send a screenshot you're comfortable sharing.
Information created by playing
- Character and progress data — your characters, their stats, inventory, position, quests, guild membership, mail, auctions, and similar game state.
- Chat and social data — messages you send in public, party, guild, or private channels, your friends and ignore lists, and guild bank activity. Some of this is retained so the Game works and so we can investigate abuse reports.
Information collected automatically
- Connection data — your IP address and connection timestamps, which are inherent to connecting to any online service. We use these to run the Game, to diagnose problems, and to detect and stop abuse (cheating, spam, denial-of-service).
- Client version and platform — so the Game can tell you when an update is required.
We do not use advertising trackers, third-party analytics scripts, or cross-site tracking cookies on our website or in the Game client.
Why we use it, and our legal basis
| What | Why | Legal basis (GDPR) |
|---|---|---|
| Username, email, password hash | To create your account, log you in, and confirm you own the email address | Performance of a contract |
| Character and game data | To let you play and to save your progress | Performance of a contract |
| IP address, connection logs | To operate the service securely and prevent abuse | Legitimate interests |
| Bug reports and screenshots | To reproduce and fix the problem you reported | Legitimate interests |
| Project news emails | To send you updates about the Game, if you asked for them | Consent (you may withdraw it at any time) |
| Consent records | To show which version of our terms you agreed to and when | Legal obligation |
Email we send you
There are two kinds, and they are separate:
- Account email (confirmation codes, security notices). You cannot opt out of these while you have an account — they are how the account works.
- Project news. Only if you ticked the optional box when registering. Every such email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us to turn it off at any time using the contact address below. We will never add you to this without you asking.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for anyone else's advertising. We use a small number of service providers to run the Game:
| Provider | What they handle | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Hetzner | Game server hosting and the database | United States |
| Cloudflare | Website hosting, game downloads, email routing | Global |
| Resend | Sending account and news email | United States |
| itch.io | Desktop game distribution | United States |
| Stripe | Voluntary donations (we never see your card details) | United States |
We may also disclose information if we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect the rights or safety of players or of the Game.
Some of these providers are located in the United States. If you are in the EU/UK, that means your data may be transferred outside your region; these providers offer Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent safeguards for such transfers.
How long we keep it
- Account and character data — for as long as your account exists. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove it from the live database.
- Backups — our database backups rotate on roughly an eight-day cycle, so deleted data can persist in a backup for up to about eight days before it ages out.
- Bug reports — kept while the issue is open and for a reasonable period afterward.
- Connection logs — kept only as long as useful for diagnostics and abuse prevention.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you may ask us to:
- tell you what personal data we hold about you, and give you a copy;
- correct data that is wrong;
- delete your account and its data;
- stop sending you project news (or stop other processing based on consent);
- object to, or ask us to restrict, processing based on legitimate interests.
Email us at the address below and we will act on your request. We will not treat you differently for exercising these rights. If you are in the EU/UK and you think we have handled your data badly, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Security
Passwords are stored as Argon2 hashes, never as text. The connection between the Game client and our server is encrypted, and traffic to our website and download servers uses HTTPS. Confirmation codes are stored hashed, expire after 30 minutes, and lock out after repeated wrong guesses. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a password you don't use anywhere else.
Children
Afterlife Online is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy materially, we will update the version and date at the top of this page and ask for fresh agreement inside the Game where appropriate. The version you agreed to is recorded with your account.
